While I know it's not that simple with science and correlations do not equal a causality, denying that the protests (if we are fair of both sides) were the main reason for the spikes seems like wishful thinking. The daily infections pre protests were high but somewhat leveled with a slow downward trend, and that despite smaller protests during that time (which certainly helped keeping the numbers from declining faster). Then after the mass protests started the infections rised to unprecedent levels.
